How Long Does It Take to Build a Custom Pool?
Here is the honest answer most builders dodge: a RutherfordMade pool goes from first meeting to first swim in as little as 45 days. Not five months. How? We do not cut corners - we cut wasted time. One designer, one crew, one point of contact, so nothing sits waiting for a hand-off.
What happens between the first meeting and the first swim.
Design + 3D walk-through
Scott draws your pool on your actual yard. You walk through it in 3D before we dig. This is where we get the shape, features, and budget right.
Permits
Scott pulls all county and city permits. We order this immediately after design sign-off so the permit timeline does not add days to the build.
Excavation
The dig. Usually one to two days. Trees come out, the shape goes in, and the project starts looking real fast.
Shell + plumbing + electrical
The pool structure, all plumbing, and all electrical are run together. Our crews know the schedule so there is no waiting between trades.
Decking, coping + finish
The surround goes in. Interior finish follows. This is when the pool starts to look exactly like the 3D design.
Fill + startup
Water goes in. Equipment is balanced and checked. Scott walks you through the system. Then you swim.
Honest about the timeline - on both sides.
What we control
Design, crew scheduling, material ordering, trade coordination, and the order of operations. All of this is planned before we dig - not figured out as we go. This is what keeps most builds in the 45-60 day window.
What we don't control
City and county permit approval times vary. A week of heavy rain can delay concrete and excavation. These are real variables and we will always tell you straight where we stand. We build buffer into the schedule for both.
If you want to be swimming by summer, start the design now.
The 45-60 day timeline starts after permits are in hand. In North Metro Atlanta, permits typically take 2-4 weeks. That means design needs to start well before your target swim date. Tell us your goal and we will tell you whether the timing works.
Swimming by Memorial Day?
Design needs to start no later than late February or early March. We can walk your yard and give you a timeline picture before you commit.
Swimming by 4th of July?
Design starting in April or May gives you a good chance. The exact window depends on permit timing in your county.
Fall or next year?
Booking later in the season often means shorter permit queues. Some of the cleanest build conditions are September through November.
What people ask about pool build timelines.
How long does it take to build an inground pool?
Most RutherfordMade builds finish in 45-60 days from ground-break. One Woodstock homeowner completed in 31 days from tree removal to a filled pool. This is 2-3x faster than the 3-5 month industry average. The key is planning the entire build before we dig, not while we go.
What slows a pool build down?
County permit approval timelines and rain are the two things outside a builder's control. Everything else - scheduling, crews, materials, trade coordination - can be planned in advance. We build buffer into the schedule for both and tell you exactly where we stand.
Can I get a pool ready by summer?
It depends on when you start. Memorial Day swimming requires design to start in late February or early March. 4th of July swimming works with an April or May start. We can walk you through the exact window for your county's permit queue during the first consultation.
